TiVo announces largest (and most expensive) consumer DVR ever made

TiVo-Mega

Today, TiVo has announced the latest addition to its popular line of home DVRs, you might just have a hard time finding a place to put it. With over 24TB of storage, the TiVo Mega is the largest consumer DVR ever made with enough room to store 26,000 hours of SD recordings or roughly three years of your life. If HD is your format of choice, you’re looking at about 4,000 hours of programming. Oh yeah, it’s also designed to be rack mounted.

Because of the physical size of the TiVo Mega, users will likely have to sprinkle in TiVo Minis throughout their home, which no longer requires a monthly fee for usage. The TiVo Mega will sport all the normal high-end features that DVR users have come to expect, including live streaming on smartphones and tablets to the ability to download on said devices for offline playback. Additionally, it will include TiVo’s top-of-the-line remote the Slide Pro, which includes a full QWERTY-format keyboard and RF signal that takes away any line-of-sight issues.

To offer a comparison, TiVo’s current high-end model the Roamio Pro, offers up to 450 hours of HD recording storage and is available at a fraction of the price. While the Mega certainly has storage on its side, the highly-rated Roamio Pro is going to pack enough punch to keep all of your recordings organized and available for a while. All TiVo models now ship with the ability to watch all of the popular streaming services, such as Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Instant Video.

The TiVo Mega will not be available until early 2015, with an expected price tag of $5,000. Until then, there are a number of other TiVo options to consider, such as the previously released Roamio or the new Roamio OTA which is designed for antenna users.
