GoPro’s HERO4 shoots 4K video at 30FPS, while the all-new HERO model is its most affordable ever

There was a time when wearing an action camera on your head in public may have brought about some awkward stares. But now, it seems like rocking a GoPro is commonplace while surfing, mountain biking, or even coming face to face with a lion.

After a couple highly publicized leaks, GoPro has officially unveiled its newest lineup of action cameras, which includes the HERO4 Black, HERO4 Silver, and the all-new entry level HERO that is the most affordable GoPro ever…

HERO4 Black ($499) has received a number of audio and video upgrades that warrant it to be called “the highest performance GoPro yet:”

…now captures cinema-quality 4K video at 30 frames per second (fps), 2.7K video at 50fps and 1080p video at a blistering 120fps, virtually eliminating rolling shutter in most scenarios while allowing for time-bending slow motion effects.

Other features of the baddest GoPro ever include faster WiFi/high resolution frame rates (2.7K at 50fps and 1080p at 120fps), updated user interface, and the ability to capture “12MP magazine cover-quality photos at burst speeds of 30 photos per second.”

GoPro’s new HERO4 Silver ($399) is its first ever to come with a built-in touch display. However, video enthusiasts will certainly notice a drop off in A/V quality because it only shoots at “2.7K30, 1080p60 and 720p120.”

Priced at just $129, the entry-level HERO camera is wrapped in a “rugged, waterproof housing” just like its higher-priced siblings, but is a step down in quality: 1080p video at 30fps and 720p video at 60fps.

While there are certainly lower-priced action cameras on the market, one of the biggest reasons to invest in a GoPro is its extensive accessory ecosystem. And on October 5th, that reason will be even bigger thanks to these new accessories:

  • Smart Remote – Control your GoPro from up to 600′ (183m) away with the wearable and waterproof remote. Conveniently mark key moments as they happen with the Smart Remote’s HiLight Tag button when paired with a HERO4 Black or HERO4 Silver.
  • The Handler – A compact floating handgrip. Lightweight, ergonomic and durable, The Handler is perfect for handheld shooting during any activity.
  • New BacPac accessories – A new and improved Battery BacPac provides almost twice the battery power over the camera’s internal battery alone. And a new LCD BacPac provides improved touch and swipe performance when used with HERO4 Black.

All of the new GoPro action cameras and accessories will be available starting next week. If the new HERO4 is out of your budget, then you may want to consider the HERO3+ Black since it’s currently on sale at Best Buy for $350.
