Silk by Saffron’s smart LED bulbs adjust your lighting based on the sun

There is a whole mess of LED and smart lighting options on the market today from traditional retailers and startup companies. Aside from saving energy and adding smart functionality, the ability to put out a custom color is one of the biggest selling points of these bulbs.

This is where Silk by Saffron comes in: a recent Kickstarter campaign that is setting out to combine the functionality of smart light bulbs with the ability to change the warmth or coolness depending on the time of day. Our bodies work better with certain color lights throughout the day. Cooler lights give us energy in the morning and warmer colors prepare for sleep at night.

But how Silk is doing it combines all that knowledge with smart functionality, creating a really cool solution to this unique problem.

Like Philips Hue, Silk by Saffron is a Wi-Fi connected bulb that is managed by a bridge that brings internet and light together. Unlike Hue, this light bulb requires no management throughout the day. After being turned on, it adjusts based on the sun, time of day and lighting in the room.

In the mornings, users will be greeted with a bright cool light that energizes the body. As the day goes on, the bulb will dim and provide a warmer tone, signaling to the brain that it’s time for bed. Silk can be manually controlled if needed, in fact it uses the light switch in your wall to adjust when needed. Multiple flicks of the switch signal a change in color or adjustment in brightness. Of course, the system can be monitored and scheduled via the iOS app.

With 41 days to go, Silk has raised just over 19% of its $100,000 goal. Early bird adopters can grab a a three-pack of lights and a bridge of $99, after that pricing runs out it will jump to $129.

For comparison, Philips Hue Lux Starter kit delivers two bulbs and a bridge for $80 while Belkin’s recently released WeMo bundles include two bulbs for $99. This pricing is to expected at this point, although we’d hope to see the prices fall in the near future.
