Timex combines its analog heritage with fitness tracking on the new Metropolitan+

Timex is taking another stab at fitness tracking. After releasing its One+ GPS fitness tracker a little over a year ago, the popular watchmaker is back with a new smart timepiece. The Metropolitan+ removes all the excess of Timex’s previously released tracker in favor of a classic design focused on long-lasting battery life. It will have all the looks and functions of a traditional analog watch with Bluetooth connectivity added in.

Even better, you’ll be able to avoid the overly technical look of some smartwatches with this model. Making it a perfect pair for more formal events. 

Timex Weekender – Runtastic Moment – Withings Activaté

Timex leans heavily on traditional styling with the Metropolitan+. It lends itself much more towards the Weekender design than a smartwatch like the Moto 360. It is high time for traditional watches with smart functionality as Runtastic just released its new Moment and Withings launched its Activité earlier this year. Both models have familiar stylings that fit in the same group as the Timex Weekender.

The Metropolitan’s traditional face will show all the expected watch information: time, date, etc. Additionally, the on-screen dials will show your progress towards step, distance and calorie goals for the day. Notifications and heart rate monitoring did not make the cut. The trade-off is a better battery life experience that is more in-line with analog watches.

Unlike most smartwatches that require charging each night, this model will be able to go for extended periods of time without charging. Battery life was not specifically mentioned in the press release which leads us to believe that it will be more on the side of months than days. Of course, there is a connected iOS and Android app that will provide access to all the data via Bluetooth that is collected throughout the day.

The watch will come in two styles, one for casual settings ($125) with a black casing and nylon or silicone band options. A more formal option ($150) has a silver case and a black leather band. Timex has placed this new release squarely in the mix of pricing for other popular fitness trackers. The popular Fitbit Charger HR and Jawbone UP3 both retail at a similar price point.

It is unclear at this time if Timex’s replacement bands will work with these models or if they will have Metropolitan-specific options at a later date.  There has yet to be an official release date set for Timex’s Metropolitan+.

The Metropolitan+ will debut in two unique styles.  One watch has a silver-tone case, a black dial with red accents and a textured leather strap.  The other variation features a black case with a black dial and orange accents and comes with interchangeable black silicone and orange nylon straps. Both styles feature quick-release straps so you can easily change your look with a variety of strap options available at timex.com.  Both watches also feature Timex’s signature INDIGLO® night-light, and the phone app is compatible with both iOS and Android devices.
