Polaroid’s new Snap+ is the beneficiary of a touchscreen display & 1080p video capabilities

Following in the footsteps of Kodak, classic camera manufacturer Polaroid has revealed a new version of one of its most popular products at CES 2016. The updated Polaroid Snap+ instant print camera improves on the previous design that was released this fall by adding a new 3.5-inch touchscreen display. While the original Snap has been subject to mixed reviews from customers, Polaroid hopes this updated version will cure some of those ills with a few fixes…

The most noteworthy addition on the Polaroid Snap+ is the 3.5-inch touchscreen display. This is something that customers have been hoping for since the original was released. Having used the first generation Snap, I can vouch for the difficulty of taking a photo with the viewfinder alone. The display should add a level of functionality and refinement that takes the camera from ‘toy’ to ‘device’ for many users.

Polaroid also upgraded the CMOS sensor to 13MP, up from 10MP on the original. The inclusion of the display also brings full 1080p HD video recording capabilities. Additionally, it can now handle microSD cards up to 128GB (over four times the previous capacity).

Another nifty addition is remote connectivity over Bluetooth via the Polaroid print app. The free iOS and Android app allows users to capture, edit and enhance photos. There are a variety of filters, stickers, effects and controls that can be applied to images captured with the Snap+.

Polaroid continues to lean on ZINK Zero Ink technology for printing 2×3-inch photos:

The ZINK-enabled printer uses heat to activate and colorize cyan, yellow and magenta dye crystals embedded in the paper. The result is full-color, high quality, long-lasting and smudge-proof images without ink cartridges, ribbons or toner.

The new Snap+ is slated for release in Q4, pricing has yet to be announced. The original camera is currently available for $99.
