Rock Band creator Harmonix teams up with Hasbro on the new DROPMIX Music Gaming System

Harmonix knows its stuff when it comes to music-based games as the creator of both Rock Band and Dance Central. The developer has now teamed up with Hasbro to create a new DJ-like experience with its own hardware controller side of things. The system consists of the DROPMIX Board, NFC-equipped song cards and the companion iOS/Android app. Players drop a card on one of the Mix Slots and then the DROPMIX Board immediately starts playing the particular part (“bass, beat, loop or vocals”) of one of the many hit songs in the game. The corresponding software then analyzes the particular cards loaded into the board to create completely unique mixes using elements of each of the songs available:

“Take Over Control” by Afrojack (ft. Eva Simons), “24K Magic” by Bruno Mars, “Closer” by The Chainsmokers (ft. Halsey), “Sing” by Ed Sheeran, “Centuries” by Fall Out Boy, “I Want You Back” by The Jackson 5, “All About That Bass” by Meghan Trainor, “House Party” by Sam Hunt and many more.

Here’s more from Harmonix on the actual game side of things:

So, how do you play DropMix? Each card in DropMix represents a different part of a song – like vocals, bass, drums, etc. As you place cards on the electronic DropMix board, which connects to a free app on your iOS or Android device, you and your friends will hear a custom mix start to take shape in real-time. We’re starting off by introducing Clash Mode, where you can either face off against one friend to play 1v1, or team up to take down two buddies 2v2. There’s a lot of depth and strategy to Clash Mode, but the core idea is that you earn points by playing cards and it’s a race to 21. There’s also an option to save your mix to your device, so when you’re playing and you’ve got those cards sounding just right, you can save it for you and your friends to enjoy.

The base model, which includes DROPMIX Board and 60 DROPMIX Cards across multiple music genres is comping in September to all major retailers for $99.99. There will also be a series of add-ons in the way of new songs starting at $5. We are yet to see a any pre-order listings just yet.

“We continue to focus on creating cutting edge play experiences and DROPMIX delivers on this in a mind-blowing way. We teamed up with Harmonix to leverage their mastery in music gaming and combine it with our expertise in physical and digital play experiences,” said Samantha Lomow, senior vice president of Hasbro Brands. “DROPMIX gives players a fresh way to combine their favorite artists and songs, find new ones, and create their best ‘drop the mic’ moments.”
