We have been seeing an interesting trend of AAA console game releases offering lengthy demos to bolster interest. Recently we saw the 1960’s set open-world of Mafia 3 dole out a beefy demo allowing players to experience the entire first act. And now it looks like the folks over at Bethesda will be doing the same…
No you can’t play Fallout 4 or Skyrim for nothing, but the sequel to one of the most exciting new franchises is now getting the free demo treatment. Dishonored 2 will be available on Xbox Live, the PlayStation Network and Steam as a free demo starting tomorrow. Like with Mafia 3, this is a fairly substantial chunk of the experience.
For those unfamiliar with the series, it is set in a fictional, steam-punk like universe where players take on the role of super natural assassins. The game endows players with incredible powers like being able to warp from one area of a room to another in the blink of an eye, possess animals/humans and so much more. It is a game about player choice as well. Run in guns blazing and kill everything in your way, or find interesting ways to avoid conflict and stealthily navigate through the richly detailed environments, it’s up to you.
Downloaders will get a chance to sneak their way through the first three missions as many times as they like. And even better, you can play as both the main characters – Corvo or Emily – each with their own unique abilities. This is the kind of game where you certainly won’t, and probably can’t, see everything or use all of the abilities in a single play through.
And just a tip for new players to the series, you’ll want to wait until mission two to get your powers before you pass judgement here. Both Dishonored 1 and, even more so, its sequel landed at the top of my personal lists for the best game of the year. Considering its ability to accomodate just about any play style, the gorgeous art design and interesting game mechanics, I would highly suggest anyone who hasn’t given this one a try yet do so as soon as possible.
If you like what you see during the demo period, your progress will indeed transfer over to the main game should you choose to purchase it. Just keep in mind, it might cost more to continue with the full digital version than to just buy the physical copy of the game.
