Square is bringing Final Fantasy XV to iOS and Android [Video]

Despite receiving its fair share of criticism since release last year, Final Fantasy XV is largely considered to be a success with several spin-offs and expansion DLCs carrying the project into 2017. While I certainly thought we might see a Switch announcement for the latest fantasy epic, it looks like Square will be turning to mobile platforms first.

Now if any of you have laid eyes on the console version of Final Fantasy XV you’ll have most likely noted its fantastic visuals, if not anything else. But if you thought for one second we would be seeing something like that on iPhone and Android, don’t. While I’m sure it would be possible to bring a lower res version of that look to handheld smartphones, it probably wouldn’t look very good when it came down to it. That is the main reason Square’s decision to go with its more cartoon-like Final Fantasy graphics doesn’t bother me.

Those of you who have played some of the other Final Fantasy mobile ports will certainly recognize the art style used in Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition. It’s basically the adorable, big-headed Funko Pop take on Noctis and the rest of his (boy band) friends.

Broken down in to 10 separate episodes, the Pocket Edition is neither a direct port or a new story set in the realm of FFXV. Square describes in about as confusing a way as possible. It is “an all-new adventure that retells the beloved story of FINAL FANTASY XV” on mobile devices, according to the company. Umm ok. So it’s exactly the same story as the console version, but it plays out slightly different due to the episodic and stripped down nature of the mobile version. I guess.

Nonetheless, it is always good to get some more Final Fantasy on iOS and it looks as though, despite the drastic change in graphics and fidelity, Square has nailed most of the characters and environments from the orignal here.

The very first of the 10 episodes will be free when the game releases later this year in the fall, but you will be buying the rest of them. While all 10 episodes will be available on day one, there is no direct pricing information available yet. If other premium priced Final Fantasy titles are any indication, you can expect to see this one end up costing you $15 or more when it’s all said and done.

The FINAL FANTASY XV POCKET EDITION for iOS, Android and Windows 10 devices, to be released later this year, is an all-new adventure that retells the beloved story of FINAL FANTASY XV, giving fans and newcomers alike the freedom to journey through Eos whenever and from wherever they want. The mobile game features the main characters and story of the console version and newly-announced FINAL FANTASY XV WINDOWS EDITION, with an adorable art style and casual touch controls optimized for mobile devices. The main story is told across ten thrilling episodes, with all ten episodes available at launch and the first episode downloadable for free.
