Ambient mood lighting systems have been at the forefront of smart home tech adoption, with Philips Hue, Nanoleaf and LIFX leading the pack. These products may seem over the top for some, but Italian design firm Digital Habits has taken things one step further for those who really value the perfectly lit environment. This endeavor has resulted in Color Swing, a lamp that instantly changes lighting based on its surroundings.

Some people, including myself, go to some pretty lengthy measures to add ambient multicolored lighting to their homes. And for good reason, as these smart lights can be the perfect means of setting the mood when winding down for the night or exciting partygoers. The folks over at Digital Habits have taken this to the next level with a reactive lighting solution it calls Color Swing.

The core idea behind the adaptive ambient light is to base one’s lighting preferences on the objects and colors around it. This results in a similar output to that of Apple’s True Tone Display technology. But rather than creating a more natural looking screen, Color Swing results in ambient lighting that blends better into its surroundings.

Digital Habits’ latest gadget is encompassed by a cylindrical pendant light that offers its on-the-fly color detection and reproduction. Wrapped in the company’s signature premium Italian design, Color Swing offers both great form and features.

So how does Color Swing work? Well at the base of its color sensing abilities, the lamp relies on an IR sensor located on the bottom to actually detect its surroundings. With the placement of the sensor, the lamp then can adapt to the color profile of just about anything underneath it.

For now, Color Swing is just a proof of concept that the creators at Digital Habits have no means of actually rolling out to store shelves. Which is a huge shame. I love my Philips Hue Bulbs and other smart lighting gadgets, but there’s nothing quite like Color Swing on the market right now. There are other reactive lights available for purchase, but none that offer quite the same aesthetic appeal.

The color information of an object is read by the interface and then transmitted to the environment: the system processes the information of the environment, with a spontaneous interaction, and releases in the environment the detected color. The essence of the installation is a small cylindrical pendant light with the interface placed on its bottom. The swing can change color instantly when it crosses a colored object below or by simply oscillating in a colorful environment Digital Habits presents Color Swing at Milano Design Week 2017 in superstudio under the theme TIME TO COLOR.
