Mutant Year Zero on PS4/Xbox One brings XCOM-style combat & talking ducks [Video]

Microsoft and Sony have both now officially revealed the debut cinematic trailer and initial details about the new Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden. Based on the pen and paper game, the new title is coming to Xbox One and PS4 this year and it looks quite intriguing.

Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden is described as a tactical adventure game that implements both story and exploration with a tactical combat system. And quite an amazing cast of characters, by the looks of it.

You will essentially be taking control of a team of anthropomorphic animal creatures as they navigate through a harsh, post-human world. The apocalyptic setting sees nature overtaking the civilization that once inhabited the earth as mutants have slowly taken over the planet. You and your team of adventurers will have to avoid/take down opposing mutants and robots in order to find the fabled “Eden”.

Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden is a tactical adventure game combining the turn-based combat of XCOM with story, exploration, stealth, and strategy. Take control of a team of Mutants navigating a post-human Earth. Created by a team including former HITMAN leads and the designer of PAYDAY. Coming to PS4 in 2018.

Speaking of which, Dux the 4-foot tall talking duck is a stealth expert and Bormin (the bore) is a tank classed character you can use to knock down barriers and the like. That’s just to name a few, we also get a look at a humanoid character that seems to have some kind of lizard or rock-like special abilities/shields and appears to be the leader of the group.

The combat will be quite reminiscent of the XCOM titles. So you can expect a tactical turn-based system but with all the usual exploration and story elements found in larger, more open-ended games.

Developers The Bearded Ladies and Ulf Andersson of Hitman and Payday fame, are yet to mention the term “open-world”, but there will be clearly be exploration, stealth, and strategy involved here, both in and out of combat.

The art style looks pretty impressive here to me as well. It makes me think of the early footage we have seen from the new Beyond Good and Evil, which if I’m lucky will come out during my life time.

While there are no specifics on the release date at this point, we do know the game is scheduled to hit PS4 and Xbox One sometime in 2018.
