Could Nintendo be planning a mini Classic Edition console for its iconic N64?

Nintendo’s Classic Edition consoles have kinda taken the world by storm lately. We’ve given them away, loved them, and these pieces of remastered iconic tech can still be nearly impossible to get at retail prices.

The rumor mill is now churning, and apparently, Nintendo has applied for a new Nintendo 64 trademark, which can hopefully only mean one thing, an N64 Classic Edition must be close.

This all comes from an application for an N64 trademark that Nintendo made in Japan. The purposes listed in the trademark are video game programs, a controller for game machines, joysticks for video game machines, TV game machines, and more.

We’ve attempted to fully translate the application, but have yet to be able to. From what we can deduct, Nintendo is just re-applying for the N64 trademark, which could be very good news.

I grew up on the Nintendo 64, and it remains one of my favorite consoles to this day. GoldenEye, Mario Kart 64 and more are some of my favorite games ever, and sadly have never been properly reproduced.

Mario Kart 8 on Switch is about as close as any game has gotten to the N64 version, for me. It’s great, but there’s something about holding the original N64 controller and playing Mario Kart.

That controller was so iconic and ahead of its time. With its centered joystick, memory cartridges, and unique tri-winged design, I love that controller still to this day.

Nintendo could just be renewing the trademark to keep others from infringing, but one can hope that Nintendo has learned from the success of its new Classic Edition launches and is bringing about one of its most beloved consoles ever.

Some are speculating that this might not be a relaunch of the N64, but just granting the ability to make N64 games again and release them on Switch. I’d love this, as well, so long as Nintendo doesn’t ruin them in the remake.

This could make more sense than an N64 relaunched console as Nintendo plans to launch its online services for Switch later this year with virtual consoles, and the N64 could be among the consoles you could choose from. Part of me wants this to happen, but I’d really like to see a miniaturized N64 Classic to add to my gaming collection too.

Of course, all of this is pure speculation until official announcements are made. But it’s nice to dream, isn’t it?
