Timex introduces its ‘no phone required’ Ironman GPS One+ smartwatch

Ironman GPS One+-Timex-smartwatch-New Toy of The Day-01

Last week Casio introduced us to its new stripped down smartwatch and this week Timex is launching the new Ironman GPS One+. Unlike options from Samsung and other tech companies, the One+ is designed to function as a standalone smartwatch without the need to be accompanied by a smartphone.

While you won’t be making calls or receiving text messages with it, the new cellular-equipped device comes with one year of free access to AT&T’s 3G cellular network. Users will be able to share location data with the “Find Me” and “SOS” features, send email based messages and make use of the 4GB of onboard storage for music (which can be beamed to a set of Bluetooth headphones).

Head below for more details and a quick introduction video:

Much like the rest of the Ironman line of watches, the new GPS One+ is targeted towards those that are into sports and more extreme activities. It is water-resistant for up to 164 feet, comes with other GPS tracking workout features and the ability to upload workout data to social networks via the included cellular data.

Timex has tapped Qualcomm for its Mirasol display technology. Similar to what you’ll find on the Toq watches, it is a low-power, 1.5-inch “vivid color” touchscreen that is easy to read in the sun like an E-Ink device. While Timex says the One+ boasts an “always-on” display and 72 hours of battery life, that is only in standby mode and drops significantly when using data and playing music to under 8 hours.

Timex and AT&T feel the watch’s lack of dependency on a smartphone is its major selling point. Even though its $399 price tag exceeds that of the fully integrated Samsung and LG devices, according to Timex it still undercuts other GPS focused options that don’t have data functionality. The new Ironman GPS One+ will be available in November at all major retailers.
