Dot is the “world’s smallest” set of Bluetooth earphones with a battery life to match

The rush to miniaturize our electronics seems to have come to a head with a new Kickstarter campaign that launched on Monday. So Special Lab’s Dot Bluetooth in-ears raised over 100% of its goal in just an hour and is at nearly 5 times its target after just two days.

So what’s all the fuss about? Well, the self-proclaimed “world’s smallest Bluetooth headset” have a nearly flush design that comes either as a stereo pair or individual mono that includes Siri and Google Now support. The only thing is, you won’t be listening to these all day.

Coming in at .5 x .8-inches, Dot weighs 3.5 grams and is available in white or black styles. Within that small package is a micro driver, battery, microphone and a speaker. The tiny size is what makes Dot notable, but also puts a damper on battery life. The official campaign page notes 6-9 hours of music listening and talk time can be expected but that is in conjunction with the portable charging case, real estimates seem to be closer to one or two hours.

Dot’s inductive charging system is pretty cool: a slender tube or Y shaped design house a mono or stereo set of buds with a microUSB input on the other end. You’ll first charge the tube, which then powers Dot in about 30 minutes throughout the day when needed. The Bluetooth 4.0 earbuds can handle answering calls and summoning Siri or Google Now with a touch of the outer button.

A single Dot can be purchased if you’re into the classic hands-free look, or a stereo set for a more traditional listening experience. Due to the Kickstarter campaign’s popularity, most early bird pricing options are sold out. Currently, a pledge of $59 will deliver a mono Dot while $79 gets you a stereo set. At this time, Dot has raised $150,000 in two days, delivery is slated for December. While we have seen smaller wireless in-ear designs before, Dot is the first on to get the price down to earth.
