Best Console Releases for May: Prey, Injustice 2, Fire Emblem, more

While last month’s release schedule was packed with some major titles, May tends to be a bit slower considering E3 is just around the corner. While we might not have a huge number of releases this month, we do have some great new games including one I am personally excited for which is Prey from Arkane Studios, along with NetherRealm’s DC fighter injustice 2, a new Fire Emblem game and more…

Prey PS4, Xbox One, PC May 5th

I really hope Prey can be another huge franchise for Bethesda and Arkane the way Dishonored is turning out to be. The sci-fi shooter takes place aboard the Talos I space station where players will have to put together their fragmented memories all while protecting themselves from the nasty alien presence on the ship.

Arkane’s creative handy work is at play here once again with an array of interesting, physics-based weapons and abilities. You can morph into inanimate objects like a mug to sneak around obstacles or enemies, just to give a single example. Here is a massive chunk of the opening of the game if you’re looking to get a peak at some gameplay. But I would suggest just checking out the trailer instead or at least skipping through the beginning so as to not spoil anything for yourself.

Prey pre-order $60 or $48 for Prime members.

Injustice 2 PS4, Xbox One, PC May 16th

Everyone’s favorite DC Superhero fighter is back for round 2 come May 16th. Along with most of the best features of the original, Injustice 2 will have an updated cast of characters and a new Gear system allowing players to upgrade/buff their characters with armor and more. New shaders allow players to customize the fighter’s overall color palette. While these enhancements sound interesting, NetherRealm has assured competitive gamers that all of it can be disabled for the game’s pro mode.

Fighters include the usual suspects like Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Joker, Aquaman and more, along with newcomers including Swamp Thing, Supergirl, Robin, Scarecrow, Blue Beetle, and Gorilla Grod. NetherRealm has loads of trailers for the characters right here.

Injustice 2 pre-order $60 or $48 for Prime members.

Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia Nintendo 3DS May 19th

The latest in the long running Fire Emblem series is scheduled to hit Nintendo’s 3DS platform this month. It is a remake of the Japan-only Famicom title known as Fire Emblem Gaiden from 1992. So while it will stray away from some of tropes the franchise has become known for lately, it will be nice for younger fans of the series to get a chance at this one on modern hardware. There is a video on Nintendo’s YouTube account detailing some of the strategic elements of the gameplay.

Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia pre-order $40 or $32 for Prime members.

Friday The 13th: The Game PS4, Xbox One, PC (digital)

After a lengthy delay from last fall, the multiplayer slasher game is set to hit PS4, PC and Xbox One on the 26th. Along with a new single player mode that unfortunately won’t be added to the game until the summer, Friday The 13th: The Game has players taking on the role of campers trying to hide from the titular killer. One player controls Jason while up to seven others are Camp Crystal Lake counselors running for their lives. You can checkout some gameplay in the video above.

Friday The 13th: The Game no pre-orders available (digital).

Honorable mentions for this month go to the VR title Star Trek: Bridge Crew which drops on May 30th and the Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2 remake for PS3/PS4 on May 26th.
