Gogoro’s second gen electric scooter has a lower price, same power

It was just over two years ago that we first told you about Gogoro, which was at the time deemed “the world’s first” smart scooter. With its sleek design and unique battery charging station, it stood out as the next big thing in two-wheeled transportation. Fast forward to 2017 and Gogoro is back with the second generation that offers a handful of upgrades in both looks as well as function.

There are actually two new Gogoro models, a regular version as well as the Plus variation. While the second generation motor delivers the same 6.4kW of power, it promises to deliver smoother torque overall. The motor offers two modes including ‘Sport’ and ‘Smart’ depending on your needs. As you might guess, that means faster top speeds or longer distances of travel. If you’re interested in a higher powered version, Gogoro does offer slightly more juice in its S model.

Gogoro also made sure to pay special attention to maintenance needs that plagued the first generation at times. This includes larger 13-inch wheels and a 51-inch base that is longer than the previous generation. Both of which work in tandem with a new breaking system that is designed to increase stability.

It’s rated to go 0-50 km/hr in around four seconds with a top speed of around 55 mph. All told, riders can count on up to 70-miles worth of range but that will vary based on conditions, etc. Those marks are identical to the original model.

There isn’t just more power under the hood, either. The redesign comes with a larger seat with additional storage space underneath that will hold two helmets at a time. There’s also a new LED light on the front that it claims will illuminate a larger space than the first generation.

Today’s news also brings a refreshed software package to version 2.0 that includes a fingerprint and PIN code system to start. The company claims that its new system makes its scooters “virtually unstealable”. Gogoro also rolled out its Energy Network across Taiwan when it launched the original version two years ago. Now it’s expanding by more than 500 locations by the end of 2017.

The bad news? Gogoro is still going to largely be based over in Taiwan. Despite the wicked cool colors and design, it’s not making its way stateside yet. It will sell for NT$38,800 which works out to roughly $1,300 USD and comes in six colors at launch: white, orange, grey, yellow, blue and red.
