SmartHalo turns your bike into an iPhone-connected fitness tracker

When going for extended bike rides, I often outfit my two-wheeler with iOttie’s smartphone mount to track my progress and in some cases, find my way home. But I am also in constant fear that my device could take a spill if the terrain gets a little out of hand. SmartHalo is a new bike accessory that delivers many of those same smartphone features in a handlebar add-on. That includes an integrated display, navigation and fitness monitoring all in a tidy package.

Of course, it is iPhone and Android compatible, so you can leverage those features without feeling like your device is exposed. SmartHalo’s add-on design promises to bring just about any bike in the modern age, and thankfully the price is rather affordable.

SmartHalo retrofits onto your handlebars, adding a modular display that can be added and removed whenever needed. Information is relayed through the circular light-up panel, directing riders to turn or continue down a road. Navigation is handled by the free iOS and Android app, allowing users to map out rides prior to heading out.

The unit itself has a built-in alarm to detract would be thieves from stealing the system. Each user receives a special HaloKey that is custom-made. It someone where to try to steal the unit, the alarm will sound as long as the key isn’t in the vicinity. So while the system itself isn’t locked to your bike there is some security features in place for peace of mind.

SmartHalo doesn’t feature any type of heart rate monitoring but it will ballpark fitness tracking, which includes distance, calories burned and speed. The integrated display does alert riders of incoming calls and notifications, but doesn’t relay any information like a CarPlay unit would, for example.

Like some of the other add-ons that we’ve covered in the past, SmartHalo has integrated LED lighting to help illuminate the road while riding. The internal battery will provide about 20-hours of use per charge, which should be plenty of a few days worth of riding at a minimum.

The new SmartHalo HUD unit for bikes is available today for $149. Additional snap-in bases can be purchased it you have more than bike for $29 each.
