Sony unveils the next generation PlayStation VR Headset

As technology companies race to position themselves as the go-to VR platform, Sony is looking to update its PS4 headset. Microsoft and even some other companies are stepping into the fray here, so Sony is going to have to stay on its toes to remain relevant in the virtual reality gaming space. Microsoft is already starting to tap third-parties to create devices for its new Mixed Reality platform and we have already seen offerings from Dell and ASUS hit the net.

Today, Sony has announced that it is readying a new version of its proprietary VR headset with a number of small, albeit quite useful updates.

We are expecting to see the new version of PlayStation VR hit store shelves overseas later this month with a number of important upgrades. While there is nothing game-changing here, several of the improvements will certainly be a welcomed addition to the platform.

First up, the Processor Unit that is used to connect PS VR to PS4 is getting some enhancements. Previously, the small breakout-box didn’t allow for HDR pass-through which has now been remedied on the new version. With the original VR headset, gamers would have to disconnect the Processor Unit from the PS4 in order to use any other HDR-supported features.

A silly hiccup that should have never existed in the first place, but at least Sony is now finally making good. Just remember, the new Processor Unit break-out box will only be supported by the second-gen headset. You’ll be able to tell the difference between the original model and the new one as Sony will be printing the serial numbers on the slightly redesigned box. CUH-ZVR1 is the original model and CUH-ZVR2 is the new one.

Other notable improvements come by way of an updated connector cable and audio system. The headphone jack has been relocated to a place that seems much more streamlined and integrated than its predecessor.

Sony is yet to offer an actual release date for the new headset in North America. But we do know it will hit store shelves in Japan in just a couple weeks time on October 14th. Sony did, however, say that pricing on the VR hardware will stay on par with the current gen when it finally does hit. It would be surprising for the company to hold this off until the new year and miss the holiday buying rush, so our best bets have it hitting stateside sometime during or before December 2017.

You’ll find even more details in this Sony FAQ on the new headset.
