The 90’s Batman Animated Series finally gets the Blu-ray treatment it deserves

It was announced on a panel at New York’s Comic Con yesterday that Warner Brothers will be remastering Batman: The Animated Series for a new Blu-ray release. This news marks the 25th anniversary of the now classic TV show that started an entire universe of cartoons for the FOX network in the 1990’s.

The guests that appeared on the Batman: The Animated Series NYCC panel were the series creator Bruce Timm, producer Alan Burnett, Tara Strong (the voice of Barbara Gordon and Batgirl), and of course Kevin Conroy (the voice actor behind Bruce Wayne and Batman). The WB’s PR representative Gary Miereanu made the announcement when he was giving away a DVD boxed set of Batman: TAS and saying that it would be the last time Warner Bros. would be giving it away due to the new Blu-ray edition coming.

The remastered collection is slated to be released “later in the year” in 2018, but there’s no word yet if there will be a digital 4K release along with it or not. We also don’t know if the WB plans to release the individual Blu-ray packages together or in separate volumes like the DVDs once were. Potentially, they could have all 85 episodes on one disc but we don’t think that is very likely.

The news also follows last July’s release of Batman: Mask of the Phantasm. It was a very successful movie that came from the original animated series.

This new release should definitely make for a nice collectors piece for any Batman fan or child of the 90’s alike. It is the first time the WB has touched this collection since 2004 and there are still a number of fans looking to hold on to these classic animated shows from their youth.

Batman: The Animated Series originally debuted in 1992, and stands as one of the most acclaimed adaptations of comic books to another medium, including winning four Emmy Awards. The original series ran from 1992 to 1995, with follow-up series The New Batman Adventures airing from 1997 to 1999, for a total of 109 episodes. The panel celebrating the show’s 25th anniversary was attended by Batman voice actor Kevin Conroy, The New Batman Adventures Batgirl voice actor Tara Strong, and Batman: The Animated Series producers Bruce Timm and Alan Burnett.

Batman: The Animated Series will be released as a remastered Blu-ray collection in 2018 from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment, as announced Sunday afternoon at New York Comic Con.
