Silicon Power Bolt B80 is the “most compact portable SSD out there”

You would never expect by the sleek and round shape of the Silicon Power Bolt B80 that you were actually looking at an external SSD. But you really are. The newly announced aluminum UFO-like device comes in at only 53 grams and supports transfer rates of up to 550MB/sec. It also has water and dust proof protection with an IP68 rating. With its unique and streamlined design it’s been dubbed the “thinnest and most compact portable SSD on the market.”

The futuristic-looking drive comes in 120GB, 240GB, or 480GB capacity options and uses a USB-C connection cable for use with the latest laptops. Performance-wise, the Bolt B80 is capable of 550MB/s read and 450MB/s write and is compatible with Mac, Windows 10/8.1/8/7/Vista/XP and Linux operating systems.

Once you plug it in, an LED indicator lets you know of the current transfer activity. Silicon Power also offers the Bolt B80 with a free download of SP widget software for data backup, restore utilities, AES 256-bit encryption, and optional cloud storage.

The drive is made of machined aluminum and (yes) has a flying saucer-like shape. But make no mistake, the enclosure is rugged enough to withstand a 1.22-meter free fall test and is IP68 water and dust proof to protect against accidental spills.

The Bolt B80 impresses with an extraordinary design, shape, size, as well as feather lightness. Its stylish, robustly round aluminum housing measures only 1.2cm thick and 7.5cm in diameter and will glide effortlessly into pockets or bags for safe storage.

Silicon Power hasn’t disclosed what kind of NAND flash memory is in play here, but only revealed the maximum sequential read and sequential write speeds of the device. Not only does this drive have a very unique shape and design, but it also has a durable aluminum outer casing. Not to mention it being extremely compact and lightweight for easy storage. Silicon Power has yet to offer a release date or pricing info, but you can read more about it from its main site.
