Smart home security cameras are more important than ever. With home owners seeking out the internet-connected devices to offer peace-of-mind while out-and-about. One downside of the popular Wi-Fi cameras is that they oftentimes aren’t the most intuitive to power, either relying on rechargeable batteries or lengthy cables. Looking to change that, Tend Secure’s latest solar-powered camera hopes to make home security more reliable.

Tend is a long-time contender in the home security camera space. Over the years the company has released a variety of indoor and outdoor cameras to suit different needs. Now the company is leveraging its experience towards a “first-of-its-kind” solar-powered security camera.

The new Lynx Solar is essentially your average Wi-Fi-enabled outdoor home security camera as it sports a fairly comparable range of features to competitors. Based around a 100-degree viewing angle, Lynx Solar boasts a 1080p HD camera alongside a built-in speaker and microphone. The entire package is housed in a weather-resistant casing which allows the device to withstand temperatures of -4 to 113-degrees.

Advanced features like motion detection, night vision and facial recognization round out Lynx Solar’s list of features. Supporting the camera’s companion iOS and Android application is a free 7-day video storage plan.

But where Tend’s new security camera stands out from the competition is its lack of reliance on traditional power methods. As its name suggests, the Lynx Solar is backed by a solar grid which allows the camera to function regardless of if your home has power. Its built-in battery offers up to a week of coverage, making the camera an ideal solution even in more cloud-covered areas.

Despite its long list of solid functionality, Lynx Solar does lack one desirable feature. As of now, the camera is essentially a standalone device, as it doesn’t work with many of the platforms like Alexa and IFTTT that other devices like Nest support. So if you’re looking for an internet-connected camera to integrate into an existing system, this won’t be the best solution.

Tend Secure’s latest home-monitoring solution comes in with a competitively-priced at $199.99. The cameras are currently available for preorder with an estimated shipping date of sometime this month. With a more budget-friendly price tag, comparable list of features and solar power support, the Lynx Solar enters as one of the most compelling security cameras on the market.
