Smart speakers and the digital assistants that reside in them offer a wide array of features, but are often leveraged for controlling the devices in our smart homes. That’s the basis behind Olie at least, an Alexa-enabled smart lamp launching via Indiegogo. With voice control leading the way, Olie also packs Qi wireless charging and more into its aluminum build.
With Amazon’s digital assistant on the rise in our homes, smartphones and on the road, Alexa-powered lighting sources have been slowly been hitting the market as well. GE’s Sol lamp caught our eye a few months ago, but unlike its ring-based and futuristic design, Olie has opted for a more conventional style and comes with a few more tricks up its sleeve.
That’s not to say the smart lamp isn’t without its charm, as Olie sports an appealing aesthetic that is anything but typical. Built by the designers of the Misfit Shine, InstruMMents has machined the lamp out of aluminum to achieve its sleek form-factor.
It comes in a few different colorways, with Olie sporting either Black, Black and Bright or Polished Aluminum finishes. Packed within the smart lamp is up to a 1100 Lumen LED bulb alongside a far-field microphone array and speaker.
Most Prominently, Olie sports Alexa integration as well as support for the Google Assistant. Olie comes in a few different models, designated into either table or floor categories. The latter of these packs the full range of voice-control functionality, but lacks a noteworthy feature found in the table-based models. The spot and area versions also include Qi wireless charging, a feature iPhone 8 and X owners are now taking full advantage of. This takes Olie from a novelty to a must-have device to outfit your nightstand or desk with.
Olie is currently seeking funding over on Indiegogo. Its campaign has already amassed over $35,000 with a full month still left to bring in even more. The smart lamp packed with Alexa and Qi charger will run $89, but a model lacking a voice assistant will only set you back $64. Shipping is estimated for sometime in June 2018, which is unfortunate given Olie would have made the perfect gift this holiday.
