9to5Toys Gift Guide: Jared’s Favorite Tech Toys – Robots, Cars and more

Everyone wants to be the coolest Mom/Dad/Aunt/Uncle/Grandma/Grandpa to their special little one this season. We don’t blame you and we completely understand that need here at 9to5Toys. For that reason we’ve looked at what amazed us the most this year from a few new tech toys and here is what we came up with:

Each of the tech toys we’ve chosen for this list have been featured on our site at one time or another. Sometimes many times over! In searching for the best tech toys this year, we looked for that extra little something that made us feel like we might need to get it for ourselves. Hopefully this list will help you find the perfect gifts for the young or even the young at heart.

First up, this isn’t the racing car set you had growing up. This Anki Overdrive starter kit has cars are controlled with a iOS or Android smartphone and includes customizable supercars with built-in weapons for battling. Your little one will be able to challenge their friends or do battle against AI opponents that actually learn to play better each time you challenge them. It also has game modes such as: Battle, Race, Time Trial, and King of the Hill to keep you enthralled for hours.  The more you play, the more upgrades you earn. With the starter kit you can build eight different battlefields and change them around in seconds. The best part? This is just the beginning! You can grow the battle with expansion tracks, supercars, and even the new supertrucks sold separately.

2. Nintendo Switch $299 | Amazon

The Nintendo Switch is pretty much an all around upgrade to the Nintendo console family, but since it can also be used as a portable (like the 3DS) that makes the Switch mush more versatile. It’s in a category all on its own compared to the PS4 and other consoles. Plus, with popular game titles, like Super Mario Odyssey, that keep emerging and third-party accessories coming from every direction, this is definitely a very popular console that is worth looking into.

 

3. Cozmo $140 | Amazon

Cozmo is an advanced AI robot that promises not to enslave you or the rest of humanity. This guy is actually pretty adorable and is capable of playing games using a compatible iOS or Android smartphone. He can even express hundreds of different emotions. From curious to clever, persistent to playful, he has personality and you can connect with him instantly. Cozmo can even learn your little one’s name, face, and special quirks. Plus, he continues to “evolve” the more you interact with him.

 

4. LEGO Boost Creative Toolbox $160 | Amazon

With LEGO Boost your children can totally “boost” their creativity with the awesome LEGO BOOST Toolbox. First, you’ll have to download the free app to your device, then your child can follow the step-by-step instructions to build any of the 5 multifunctional models. They’ll get to meet Vernie the Robot, the multi-tooled Rover 4, Frankie the Cat plus many more! The kit even includes a LEGO move hub with Bluetooth connectivity, interactive motor and color and distance sensors. The set has a total of 847 pieces and is intended for boys and girls between the ages of 7 and 12 years old. 

5. Star Wars Sphero Droids from $81 | Amazon

Last but not least is the ever popular Star Wars Droids with all new powers thanks to Sphero. R2-D2 is the astromech from a from the galaxy far, far away and has been brought to life like never before. You’ll be able to control this iconic Droid with your smartphone and it comes complete with sounds and bright LEDs. You can even download the Sphero Edu app and use character-specific commands to program R2-D2 and complete STEM activities as well.
