The stellar puzzle-platfomer Fez is now available on iOS [Video]

Fez was released on the Xbox Live Arcade back in April of 2012 to critical praise. After a notably long development time, the game went on to sell over a million copies in the first year before it was expected to hit other platforms.

After the year-long exclusivity deal with Microsoft lapsed, the game went on to release on PS4 and PC. While announcements were made regarding an iOS port around the same time, the colorful puzzle-platformer never hit Apple’s mobile operating system. But, after a very long wait, the Phil Fish designed Fez is now downloadable for iPhone and iPad.

Players take on the role of Gomez and his magical Fez. It is essentially your typical throwback-style 2D platfomer, but with a very unique perspective on things. Players can essentially flip the entire game world to view one of four sides of what is actually a 3D space. Think a 2D side scroller, with four planes you can switch to at anytime. This, as you can imagine, leads to some very interesting environmental puzzles and intensive platforming. You can check out some gameplay footage right here and the mobile trailer below.

From there, players are tasked with collecting a series of cubes in order to save the world, but there are loads of secrets and interesting mysteries to uncover throughout the experience. Needless to say, if you’re into these kinds of games and haven’t given this one a shot yet, do so immediately.

Gomez is a 2D creature living in a 2D world. Or is he? When the existence of a mysterious 3rd dimension is revealed to him, Gomez is sent out on a journey that will take him to the very end of time and space. Use your ability to navigate 3D structures from 4 distinct classic 2D perspectives. Explore a serene and beautiful open-ended world full of secrets, puzzles and hidden treasures. Unearth the mysteries of the past and discover the truth about reality and perception. Change your perspective and look at the world in a different way.

Early reports suggest the on-screen iOS controls and swipe gestures used for the game are more than capable. However, Polytron has been nice enough to include full MFi game controller support. So just connect your Bluetooth controller and watch those, usually awkward, on-screen controls disappear forever. Like just about every mobile title that supports physical controllers, this is the best way to play Fez.

FEZ Pocket Edition is now available on the App Store as a Universal app for both iPhone and iPad for $4.99.

Curiously, the game isn’t optimized for the iPhone X and will just run with those black bars along the side. You would think a game that has been in development this long that is releasing after iOS 11 would have considered all this, but here’s to hoping an update drops in the near future.

It looks as though the game will be launching on Android devices as well, but the listing on Google Play is not live just yet.
