MoviePass will soon let subscribers bring friends, family plans being considered

There’s a good chance that you’ve heard about MoviePass, the subscription service that lets you watch multiple movies in theaters a month for less than the price of a regular ticket. The longevity of the MoviePass‘ business model has been questionable at best, but nevertheless it continues to innovate with today’s announcement that the option to bring a friend will be coming soon.

MoviePass has had many ups and downs over the past few months. Many speculated that the company would have closed its doors by now, but somehow, the company has managed to stay afloat and it is not content to rest on its laurels.

According to the CEO, the most requested feature from users is the ability to bring along a friend or family member with them. This is not surprising since not many people enjoy going to the theater alone. This is not available yet and while a concrete date was not provided, MoviePass announced a goal of releasing the new feature next month.

The CEO also hinted that it is considering the addition of a family plan to its subscription lineup. Something that would provide a discount for an entire family to see movies together, at an even further discounted rate. But don’t get your hopes up too high since this plan may take quite a while to implement and the future of the service is still uncertain.

The service recently added a limitation to only allow viewing any given movie one once. However, this limitation can be worked around by going to a different theater. The reasoning for this move isn’t entirely clear, but it may have been implemented to combat fraud.

In addition to today’s bring-a-friend announcement, the company also made it clear that it is working to fight fraud with the implementation of Ticket Verification. In a nutshell, some users may be required to upload a picture of their ticket stub before being able to see their next movie.

MoviePass Unlimited was replaced by a four movie per month subscription back in April, which caused quite a bit of backlash. Within two weeks, the service brought back the popular unlimited subscription.

Currently, the company offers two subscription options, MoviePass and MoviePass Unlimited. For the cost of $7.95 per month, MoviePass allows users to watch three movies. For an additional $2, subscribers can get MoviePass Unlimited and attend the theater as often as once a day.
