Commodore 64 Mini is official this October as pre-order details emerge

We first caught wind of the C64 Mini back in September as the classic 1980’s Commodore console was first detailed as the next gaming system up for a retro-redux. Details were somewhat thin when we first covered last fall, but this morning we’re getting an official release date and more. Full details below.

Retro Games has officially announced this morning that its 1980’s remake will be released on October 9th. Dubbed the C64 Mini, it will ship with 64 pre-loaded titles when it’s shipped to North America retailers this fall. Unfortunately, we’re not getting much in the way of details on pricing at this time but our best guess is in the $75 range. That’s similar to what we’ve seen Nintendo do with its most recent retro re-releases. CNET is reporting, however, that $70 is the official price tag but we’ve yet to receive confirmation from the manufacturer.

The C64 Mini will arrive with a number of classic titles that gamers will remember from the glory days. This includes favorites like Boulder Dash, Cosmic Causeway, Speedball and more. Check out the entire list of titles right here on this landing page.

It’s 1982 and a new home computer graces the scene. Out goes the silent black and white experience and in with 64KB of RAM, colour graphics, and synthesizer sound. Roll forward 35 years and kick nostalgia into overdrive with the release of THEC64 Mini. A tiny but perfectly formed 50% scale replica of this much loved machine. Featuring high-definition output via HDMI, a classic style joystick and 64 built-in games including classics like Uridium, Paradroid, Hawkeye, Nebulus and Monty Mole.

Retro Games will be shipping the C64 with the Mini unit, a joystick, plus HDMI and USB cables. A wall power supply will not be included, but much like the NES Classic, we’re guessing just about any 2.4A wall plug will do the trick. There are dual USB ports built-in to the unit itself, which will allow users to run C64 BASIC if you want to go next level.

Like other recent retro releases, users will be able to set custom visuals to recreate those popular CRT graphics of yesteryear. The C64 Mini will also offer support for saved games, something that its original counterpart lacked. These two features have become standard on recent retro re-releases as modern technology helps bring these old systems into the modern age.

While pre-orders have yet to officially launch, listings are available over at Amazon. You can keep an eye on this page as we’re expecting it to go official anytime in the next few weeks. The C64 Mini is also expected to be available at Best Buy and GameStop when it launches in October.
