Soliom Doorbell is a truly wireless video doorbell that’s solar powered

Video doorbells have taken home security by storm and have popped up seemingly everywhere. One area that seemingly no one has innovated yet is in powering these doorbells.

Currently, you have to use rechargeable batteries or swap out regular batteries on a constant basis (every several months) to keep the doorbell powered. This isn’t a huge hassle, but should the batteries die while you’re away from home, it could be disastrous. In comes Soliom, a truly wireless doorbell that is powered by the sun so you never have to worry about changing batteries again.

When it comes to installing a video doorbell, there’s a lot that (can) go into it. You have the regular doorbell wiring, which can be daunting to some, but there’s also the powering of the new doorbell itself.

Video doorbells will draw more power than a normal doorbell because it has a lot more electronics to run. Generally, there’s just the bell itself and maybe a light that needs to be powered, but a video doorbell has speakers, lights, microphones, cameras, and Wi-Fi modules to run, along with processors and more.

That will draw more power than normal, and because of this, you’ll need to use an external power source. Most video doorbells have this source built-in as AA (or AAA) batteries or maybe a proprietary Lithium-Ion rechargeable option, but regardless there’s something that will likely need to be charged unless you completely rewire the doorbell circuit.

Soliom aims to change that. With its built-in solar panel, there’s no need for batteries or rewiring as it can power itself. It is IP65-rated for weatherproofing, features motion detection, two-way talking, 1080p resolution (with night vision), and there are no monthly fees on its cloud storage.

This smart video doorbell can be monitored from your phone so you can always know who’s there and can easily speak with neighbors, delivery men, or even burglars should someone attempt to break into your home.

This is a great change from other offerings that will charge monthly subscription fees and require an engineering degree to install. According to Soliom, the doorbell has a “one-step installation process” and aims to change video doorbells forever.

There’s currently no pricing details or launch date, but you can sign up on the company’s website to be notified once pre-orders are made live. Depending on launch pricing and availability, Soliom could really make a name for itself in the smart home security space as an easy-to-use and affordable option.
