The Elder Scrolls: Legends will likely only be available on cross-platform-enabled systems

A hot topic lately in the gaming world has been cross-platform playing, and while most manufacturers support this, not everyone is on board. Sony is known for being somewhat hostile toward cross-platform gaming, most notably with Fortnite issues when it comes to those on Nintendo’s Switch.

Well, we might finally get a good resolution out of this. Bethesda, one of the world’s largest game studios, recently was interviewed by Game Informer about its upcoming title The Elder Scrolls: Legends. In the interview, the game studio said it might be looking to pressure companies into allowing cross-platform playing or face the potential of not having the latest Elder Scrolls game released for that system.

Cross-platform gameplay is something people have longed for since online gaming became a thing. Only recently has it started to become a reality, at least, for those not on Sony’s PlayStation platform.

Though PlayStation gamers can fight against certain platforms on specific games, there’s a lot of limitations there. Recently, when Fortnite launched on Nintendo’s Switch if you had previously signed into your Fortnite account on PS4, it was locked from being used on Switch. And vice versa. This was a Sony problem, not a Nintendo or Fortnite issue and had gamers in an uproar.

This past week at QuakeCon, Game Informer sat down with Bethesda’s senior vice president of global marketing and communications, Pete Hines, to chat about the upcoming Elder Scrolls: Legends game. There was much talked about, but one big thing was that gameplay will be not only cross-platform, but your progress will also transfer between your different systems.

Hines went on to say, “It is our [Bethesda] intention in order for the game to come out, it has to be those things on any system.” This boils down to a very basic premise: for a system to have The Elder Scrolls: Legends on it, it must support both cross-platform play and progress syncing.

The interview went on to talk about the game’s current state: it matters not whether you’re on Apple, Google, Steam, or Bethesda.net, if you buy expansion packs, make progress, or do anything related to the game, it’ll be available everywhere.

“It doesn’t matter what platform you play on, you play against everyone else who is on at that moment.” Hines went on to say “…those [terms] are non-negotiable.”

Though Hines didn’t specifically comment on PlayStation access to The Elder Scrolls: Legends, the writing is on the wall. If Sony doesn’t come to the table with cross-platform play, there’s a chance (and it seems large) that the game will not make it to the company’s flagship platform.

This could light a fire at Sony to get cross-platform playing working, or maybe Sony will just decide it doesn’t need Bethesda’s latest game available on its system.

With more and more games becoming cross-platform, could this sway your next console purchase? Let us know on social media or in the comments below!
