Brilliant Control replaces your light switch with a smart home hub, HomeKit support planned

Considering that the list of smart home accessories keeps growing larger and larger, there always seem to be shiny, new options vying for our attention. Just last week we reported that Philips, a company probably best-known in the smart home world for its Hue light bulbs, has a hybrid switch in the works set to replace or join its current offerings. With options from Lutron, Wemo and others, there are certainly lots of switch products to consider, but with today’s release of Brilliant Control, things just got even more competitive.

Of all the options out there, Brilliant Control seems like it may have the chops to take the crown as being the most daring and innovative. Coming in with four models, Brilliant Control sports a built-in display, camera, controls for at least one light, and the promise that it ‘works with all smart home products’.

We covered Brilliant Control earlier this year when the company offered details at CES 2018. Since then, both its pricing and release date have changed, with its launch being pushed back significantly by about 6-7 months.

Putting the delayed launch aside, the Brilliant Control will likely apply pressure to well-known smart light switch manufacturers considering the features and level of convenience it packs into its small package.

Brilliant’s claim that its new light switch gives ‘touch and voice control over all your smart home devices’ is a tall order to fulfill, but when taking a look at the list of integrations that it offers, it certainly checks a lot of boxes.

Nest, Ecobee, Ring, Philips, Honeywell, Wemo, and Sonos are some of the better-known smart home brands that many consumers are familiar with and the Brilliant Control offers support for them right out of the gate.

Considering the Lutron light switches, Philips Hue bulbs, iDevices wall outlets, and Schlage Sense door locks that I have spent loads of money on, I have no intention of migrating away from Apple’s HomeKit anytime soon.

If you find yourself in the same boat but are intrigued by the Brilliant Control, there is no need to fret since the company has addressed this directly on its FAQ page by stating that it plans to add support for HomeKit in future releases.

The Brilliant Control is available for order today on the company’s website with ship dates currently being estimated somewhere between 1-2 weeks. Pricing for the new light switch starts at $299 and goes as high as $449 depending on which model you opt to purchase.
