This morning, Astrohaus has unveiled the follow-up to its original E-ink Freewrite typewriter. The new Freewrite Traveler arrives with a series of upgrades. Its foldable design arrives with mobile lifestyles in mind. Users can still save work to the cloud and its browser-less workspace remains the key feature for writers looking to avoid distractions.

Astrohaus unveils Freewrite Traveler
The Astrohaus Freewrite Traveler weighs in a just 1.8-pounds, which is over 50% less than the original. Of course, keyboard snobs are wondering what kind of keys we’re working with here. Cherry MX Brown fans rejoice, and relax. Traveler also features a scissor-switch system that make take away any joy those Brown keys delivered. This results in an experience that is more MacBook Pro than mechanical keyboard.
Astrohaus has also used an E-ink display as its panel of choice, which helps eliminate a few concerns. For one, it’s easier on the eyes. But it also delivers better battery life. Users will be able to enjoy around 30-hours of use on a single charge. USB-C reigns supreme as Astrohaus has the foresight that some companies still lack.
Cloud storage remains an alternative to Freewrite’s built-in storage. Dropbox, Google Drive and others offer support when connected to a Wi-Fi network. One big addition is the ability to go back and edit text while typing. Although it seems like a no-brainer, the original version required writers to delete any text following an error to correct.
Distraction-free writing highlights Freewrite Traveler
As someone who writes for a living, I can certainly speak to the downfalls of distractions on a daily basis. Checking Twitter, Slack and email all can derail an otherwise productive morning. The beauty of Freewrite is that it intentionally removes all of those distractions. But in doing so, it creates a multi-step process for sharing your work. This trade-off may be worth it for some, perhaps longer novel writers, but for me I wouldn’t see the value. Those that do not require extensive linking and write more from thought than source likely don’t see this as an issue.
