LG unveils gram 14 and 17, two new laptops w/ 20+ hour battery life and compact form-factors

LG gram 2-in-1 Laptop

The PC industry is struggling to remain exciting. This is largely due to the fact that we are in an era where iPads and iPhones not only look great, but they are also beginning to surpass the performance offered by many Intel and AMD-powered laptops. For this reason, we are seeing some breakthrough innovations in laptops that trim down bezel sizes and overall dimensions as a whole. With the announcement and upcoming debut of its new 14 and 17-inch gram laptops, LG is showing that it has the chops for competing with the best of them, including Apple.

LG gram 14

Probably the less exciting of the two is the LG gram 14. It is new to the lineup, with its most obvious feature being a 2-in-1 form-factor. When it comes to the 2-in-1 design, there are plenty of options to pick from since each of the big players has one (except Apple). Samsung has its Notebook 9 Pro, Google offers a 2-in-1 Pixelbook, and Microsoft recently launched its low-cost Surface Go.

Bearing this in mind, any new 2-in-1 PC should either have top-notch features or a compelling price point. Since LG has yet to clarify pricing of its upcoming 14-inch laptop, we’ll have to settle for the specs it has shared for now. A quick breakdown of those would be a a 1920×1080 screen resolution, an 8th-generation Intel i7 processor, up to 16GB of RAM, up to 512GB SSD storage, an included Wacom AES 2.0 Pen, a U.S. military-grade hinge, and 21-hour battery life. Considering that none of these specs outside of battery life are terribly exciting, we’ll have to hope that its price point makes for a compelling argument.

LG gram 17

Unlike the gram 14, the larger 17-inch model has a clear feature that cannot be overlooked. That’s a small, ultralight form-factor that is comparable to the dimensions and weight of most 15-inch laptops. If you’re used to using a 15-inch MacBook Pro, check out some of the comparisons we wrote about earlier today.

“LG gram has evolved in accordance with what consumers have been asking for – super-light laptops that pair performance with optimum portability,” said Jang Ik-hwan, head of LG’s IT business division. “With beautiful displays, compelling design and enough power for productivity and play, the 2019 LG gram models deliver convenience on a whole new scale, bringing unprecedented value to the laptop experience.”

The gram 17 offers a 2560×1600 display, an 8th generation Intel i7 CPU, 20-hour battery life, and configuration options for up to 16GB of DDR4 RAM and 512GB of fast SSD storage. If you have any USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 peripherals, the new model will offer connectivity for that along with USB-A, AUX, and more.

LG has not offered pricing or a release date for either of its new models, but we expect this information to be made public during CES 2019, when the company physically shows its new gram laptops to the public.
