Target’s same-day delivery service set to expand, will cover ‘all major product categories’ in 2019

Target Black Friday Plans

When most people think of same-day delivery, generally Amazon comes to mind. I love getting Prime same-day, as it means I can get something within a few hours and never have to leave the house. Back in April of this year, Target announced that it would begin to offer same-day delivery in select areas. Now, Target’s same-day delivery service will expand to cover “all major product categories” in 2019.

Before now, Target only offered same-day store-to-home deliveries (or two-day site-to-home deliveries). This meant you would have to be in a physical location and have them deliver what you purchased in-store instead of bringing it home yourself. Through Shipt, a recent acquisition, Target will soon be offering site-to-home same-day deliveries.

Target’s Shipt to expand same-day delivery to all major product categories

Spotted by TechCrunch, Shipt plans to offer same-day delivery of “all major product categories” by 2019. Currently, the service offers same-day delivery on groceries and other household essentials, plus offerings from a few other categories.

This expansion means you’ll be able to order just about anything from Target’s website and have it show up at your home on that same day. Target has been trying to get on the heels of Amazon for a while since the online shopping giant is second to no other when it comes to Internet-based orders.

Target didn’t specify how many SKUs would be added, or when the expansion would officially begin, however. The retail behemoth has been remodeling its stores to offer spaces for Drive Up customers, for those who order online and want to pick up in the store.

There is definitely room for improvement with Target’s site and app, however, as with many big-box retailers. Once this expansion is in full effect, Target will offer same-day pickup in store, same-day delivery from the store, and same-day store-to-home deliveries. Finding out what products are eligible for which method is something that Target needs to make absolutely clear to its end-users.

Target needs to make sure that they do this right, but should they get it all perfect, it could be a huge win for the retailer. Amazon still lacks physical stores that carry a majority of its product offering, so people still have to rely on shipping methods to get products. Target could soon have everything perfect here; same-day site-to-home delivery, same-day site-to-store pickup, and same-day store-to-home delivery. That would really answer many consumers’ questions and desires when it comes to purchasing products, and it will be interesting to see how Target implements it all.
