New story-based adventure game from former BioShock devs puts players in the shoes of a blind protagonist

While we don’t tend to cover the wealth of games that take to Kickstarter for funding, this one caught our eye. Perception is an upcoming narrative-driven horror adventure game with elements of stealth and mystery created by former BioShock developers.

We have seen what feels like a countless number of first person, story-driven horror games pop-up across the indie game development world over the past few years. But you’d be wrong to put Perception in the same category once you take control of the blind protagonist Cassie:

“Every sound creates a visual.” Both Cassie and the player rely on echolocation to navigate through the game world. With Cassie’s heightened sense of hearing and “razor-sharp wits”, the game’s impressive visuals materialize in front of you based on sound. Everything from a gust of wind, to the grandfather clock striking midnight, or sound created by the player reveal the world around you.

This is a game focused on story, not combat, presumably similar to the approach seen in the stellar BioShock titles. Cassie has nothing but her wit, a smartphone and a cane as she explores the mystery behind an abandoned mansion and its terrifying inhabitants. The game will take players through time, showing them different versions of the mansion through the ages as Cassie unravels its stories:

After months of research, she discovers an abandoned mansion in Gloucester, MA. Once there, Cassie finds that Echo Bluff is worse than her nightmares. A ghastly Presence has tormented its inhabitants over generations, and it now hunts Cassie. She must solve the estate’s mysteries or become one of its victims.

While the project already raised $50,000 quite quickly, it still has another $100K to go. Reports suggest the game is already confirmed for a 2016 Steam release, but it will need to get up into its stretch goals before we see it hit Mac, Linux or PS4. You can get a digital download of the game for a $20 pledge.
