Amazon looks to shake-up the car buying process w/ its new Vehicles resource

Amazon has set out to make your next car purchase a little less painful. While not going all-in and actually selling cars directly (imagine ordering a Tesla with Prime shipping?!), it is looking to insert itself squarely into the pre and post purchase experience for car buyers.

Amazon Vehicles is “a car research destination and automotive community” with loads of specifications, high-quality images, reviews, pricing details and more for new and classic cars.

Purchasing a new car typically involves carefully navigating a sea of misleading and unnecessarily complicated details. From exact pricing information to getting honest reviews, it’s all very murky and hard to nail down. Amazon thinks it can improve this process in a meaningful way:

“Our goal is to support customers during one of the most important, research-intensive purchases in their lives by helping them make informed decisions every step of the way,” said Adam Goetsch, Director of Automotive at “Amazon Vehicles is a great resource for customers who are interested in car information or looking for a broad selection of parts and accessories – all enhanced by the ability to tap into the knowledge, opinions, and experiences of other car owners within the Amazon customer community.”

You can still add cars you already own to your “garage” as an easy way to track down compatible parts and accessories. Amazon boasts an extensive catalog of makes and models so you shouldn’t have a problem tracking down your specific vehicle.

For now, there’s no official indication Amazon plans to get into direct-to-consumer car sales (à la Tesla), but it definitely feels like Jeff Bezos and company are moving in that direction.

Any further disruption in the auto industry would be good news for consumers since it’s been such a mess for so long. Just ask anyone who’s recently bought a car (especially pre-owned!) from a traditional dealership.
