Today Amazon is updating its Key in-home delivery service with a new way to have packages safely stowed away. If having a UPS or FedEx delivery driver open your front door is out of your comfort zone, now you’ll be able to have them leave items in your garage. Thanks to integrating Chamberlain MyQ garage door openers, you’ll be able to know your packages are safe and sound without sacrificing privacy for in-home delivery. Head below for additional details as well as other enhancements Amazon has made to the service.
Similar to how for Home only works with a selection of compatible smart locks, specific hardware is required in order to take advantage of the new Garage variation. You need to have some form of MyQ garage door opener, so whether that comes in the form of replacing your existing opener altogether with a Chamberlain or LifeMaster model is up to you. There’s also the option of retrofitting your existing one with Chamberlain’s $80 MyQ Smart Garage Door Opener.
Unlike the in-home option, having a delivery driver stow your package in the garage won’t require one of Amazon’s Cloud Cameras. So not only is it less invasive than Key for Home, but the upfront cost is also notably smaller.
Today’s announcement also brings with it some additional updates to the service. With Amazon integrating Ring more deeply into its smart home and security ecosystem, you’ll now be able to lock and unlock Key-compatible deadbolts from the Ring app.
And speaking of smart locks, a new model joins the roster of compatible options. The Schlage Encode Smart Wi-Fi Deadbolt is said to be the first Wi-Fi-enabled smart lock that supports Key. It’ll retail for $250 and is currently available for preorder on Amazon with a March 5th release date.
Amazon continues to bet on new ways to help ensure that your packages make it into your hands, and today’s improvements are definitely noteworthy.
